Alleppey
Alleppey is known as the Venice of the East, Alleppey is an important backwater destination. Noted for its boat races, beaches, marine products & coir industry, Alappuzha is also home to Kuttanad – the Rice Bowl of Kerala, which is one of the few places in the world where farming is done below sea level. Called the rice bowl of Kerala, Kuttanad is perhaps the only region in the world where farming is done 1.5 to 2 m below sea level. Inland waterways which flow above land level are an amazing feature of this region. A 137 – year – old pier which extends into the sea & an old light house add to the attractions of the beach.
Alleppey Beach
Alleppey Beach or Alappuzha Beach has a long stretch of sandy beach with a lighthouse and a pier jutting out into the sea, a reminder of its age-old maritime importance.
Alleppey Backwater
Alappuzha is an important tourist destination in India.The Backwaters of Alappuzha are the most popular tourist attraction in Kerala. A houseboat cruise in these backwaters is a delightful experience. It connects Kumarakom and Cochin to the North and Quilon to the South.
Nehru Trophy Boat Race
The not-to-be-missed spectacle in Alleppey is, of course, the Nehru Trophy Boat Race which began in 1952 on the occasion of the visit of India's first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, to Alleppey.
Marari Beach (Mararikulam)
The Marari Beach, located here is one of the finest beaches of South India. Marari originates from the name of this village where life remains the same for the people. Mostly fishermen, they venture out to the sea to earn their livelihood.
Krishnapuram Palace
The Krishnapuram Palace was built during the reign of Marthanda Varma, a Travancore king. This 18th century building was built in two-stories & crafted with traditional Kerala architectural features which include gabled roofs, dormer windows and narrow corridors.
Ambalapuzha Sree Krishna Temple
The Sri Krishna Temple is located at Ambalapuzha, the temple is just 14 km away from Alleppey. It is one of the most popular temples of the state with the classic temple architectural style of Kerala. It is equally renowned for its Palpayasam, sweet milk porridge.
Pathiramanal
Pathiramanal is a striking small island on the Vembanad Lake only reachable by means of a boat. It is set to be developed as a major tourist spot in Alleppey.
Karumadi
Close to Alleppey, the village of Karumadi is well-known for its Karumadi Kuttan, a black granite figure of Buddhan that is believed to have been created in the 9th or 10th Century. During his visit to the state in 1965, the Dalai Lama worshipped at this holy place.
Arthunkal Basilica
Arthunkal Church, located at a distance of 23 km to north of Alleppey is one of the most important churches in entire state. Originally built in first century by St Stephen, this church is considered as one of the seven original churches constructed by him.
